5 Things To Consider When Starting Your Own Business

  1. Treat your new business like a job. What do we mean by this? Simply put, you need to put the same hours in (or more) than you would give to an employer. Getting up and dressed (even if you’re working from your bedroom) ensures that you have the right mindset and are ready for whatever the day may bring. The old adage “the more you put in, the more you get out” is so true.
  2. The buck stops with you. If something goes wrong there is no boss to fix it, so a can-do attitude is absolutely essential. Successful entrepreneurs don’t know everything and can’t do everything but they have the tenacity to ask the right questions and keep going until the have a solution.
  3. Keep your business finances and your personal finances separate. Ensure you have a separate bank account that works for you and make sure you are logging all your income and expenditures correctly so  you don’t get a nasty shock when your tax bill arrives!
  4. Think about how you’re going to pay yourself – money in the Company belongs to the Company so you can’t just dip in to it – are you going to take dividends or pay yourself a wage?
  5. What will happen when you take time off work – who is going to respond to your customers when you are on holiday taking a well earned break?  It’s really important that the business keeps on running and you don’t lose any new leads and your existing clients continue to feel valued.
